How to Maintain Your uPVC Doors

How To Maintain Your uPVC Doors

Have you recently replaced your doors with a uPVC framed option and are wondering how to extend the life of the joinery? uPVC is an excellent material for a wide range of doors due to its natural insulating, soundproofing and safety qualities. It is one of the lowest maintenance joinery solutions on the market and a great choice for homes across New Zealand. Eco Hamilton explains how to maintain and clean your uPVC doors to ensure that they give you their benefits for a long time!

Cleaning the door frame and glass

Maintaining a uPVC door is very similar to the maintenance of uPVC windows. With a few household items, you can clean your door frame and glass in a short amount of time and set them up for a long life. As uPVC is extremely low maintenance, you will likely only need to clean the surface every few months, depending on where your home is located. To maintain the frames and glass, you just need dishwashing liquid and warm water. If there is any soil or dirt on the door, soak the surface for a short amount of time with this mixture and rinse with clean water. To avoid any marks, wipe the surface with a micro-fibre cloth or paper towel, and your doors will look new again.

We suggest you avoid using any polishing agent on the uPVC frames, as this can damage the surface and cause discolouration. Cleaning your frames and glass has never been easier!

Protecting the surface from scratches

To prevent any scratches to the frames and glass on your uPVC doors, ensure that you don’t use any sharp objects, such as razor blades and metal scrapers. We understand that it can be difficult to remove hardened dirt or paint from your doors, but we suggest you still don’t use any sharp objects to avoid damage done to the surface. Our suggestion is to try and remove any dirt before it hardens with dishwashing liquid and warm water and never to use any knives and other harsh objects on the glass or the frame of your uPVC doors. We suggest covering up your doors if you are renovating, painting or doing large work in the garden to avoid the surface from getting dirty.

Caring for your opening hardware and door handles

Maintenance of your windows also includes cleaning and checking up on the hardware, such as handles and gaskets. You can simply use a vacuum cleaner or warm soapy water to remove any soil, dirt and dust from your gasket and ensure that your door closes, opens and slides without any issues. Ensure you always rinse after using dishwashing liquid or soap on the hardware to avoid any damage in the future. Apply silicone oil to the gasket at least twice a year to lengthen its life, and make sure that your door seals airtight at all times.

Remove any dirt from the tracks of your sliding doors to protect the hardware from wear and tear. This will also ensure that the door will slide seamlessly and that you won’t have any issues with the operation of the system. At Eco Hamilton, we suggest you complete a full maintenance at least once a year, where you clean all surfaces, remove any dirt from the gasket and tracks and grease all moving and locking parts with an acid-free lubricant. To make the sliding even easier, place a few drops of light machine oil in all guiding slots.

Other things to be mindful of

If you live near the ocean, water treatment plan or in a location with high pollutants in the air, you will need to clean your uPVC doors more often. We suggest regularly checking for damage and performing the above-mentioned ritual every two months. This will help your doors look good and work well for a long time.

Eco Hamilton is here to help you with all uPVC door maintenance and cleaning questions. We support our customers in maintaining and caring for their frames and glass to ensure that they enjoy their high-performing doors for a long time coming.
